Finding Balance: When to Celebrate, When to Press On

Card of the Day: Four of Wands (Reversed)

Energy to Bring: Temperance

Just as there are many ways to interpret cards upright, there are many ways to interpret them reversed.

A familiar approach for me when engaging a reversal is to begin by acknowledging the upright meaning—and then explore what happens when that idea is taken to extremes, whether of too much or too little.

This approach resonated this morning as I pulled the Four of Wands reversed.

Upright, the card speaks to celebration: two figures, arms held high, perhaps dancing, rejoicing in the luxury of a festively decorated garden.

In reverse, the card invites reflection.

What happens when we celebrate to excess—when the revelry becomes a way to avoid what is unfinished or unresolved?

Or, on the other hand, what happens when we deprive ourselves of any celebration—when we move so quickly to the next task that we never pause to honor what we’ve accomplished?

Two very different reflections—and a need for clarity.

So I pulled a second card: Temperance.

Perhaps today’s message is about finding balance between these two poles.

And isn’t that a central task of life? Life is lived in degrees—work balanced with play, spending balanced with saving, structure balanced with freedom, creativity balanced with the steady path.

Here, too, balance.

What does taking time to celebrate look like?

How do we honor what we have accomplished without stealing from what is yet to be done?

What is the cost of overindulgence?

What is the cost of unrelenting perseverance?

Balance is not something to master once and for all—but something to meet, moment by moment.

How can I apply this today?

  • I will notice whether I am rushing past my own milestones or lingering too long in celebration.

  • I will honor progress while keeping my gaze steady on what comes next.

  • I will practice balance without judgment—knowing it is never static, but always shifting.

  • I will remember that moderation can be a quiet form of wisdom.

I welcome all parts of myself—known and unknown, shining and shadowed.

I honor my past for what it has taught me.

I trust my intuition to lead me.

I release what no longer serves me.

I walk forward with steadiness, guided by the light within me.

Be well, be present, be at peace.
